Lyrics that Stick with You

A good book is not the only thing that can leave a lasting impression. Music lyrics have a way of doing this too. At least for me.

When I am making my commute to and from work I only listen to the radio or a CD about 30% of the time. For the most part I like the silence to meditate, pray or think through my current WIP. The other night while driving home, out of the blue a song popped into my head. It is one of my favorites from church – The Power of Your Love, by Geoff Bullock. I don’t know why this song came to me, but soon I was singing it while driving down the interstate, with no radio backing me up.

Had I not pulled into my driveway, I would have probably launched into one of my other favorites – In Christ Alone by Stuart Townend and Keith Getty. This song never fails to bring tears to my eyes.

If you are unfamiliar with either of these songs I hope you look them up and give a listen or read the lyrics.

When I am not listening to a Christian station, I am listening to a station that plays music from the 1960s to present. There have been some awesome music and lyrics written in my lifetime.

Is there a song, or set of songs you sing during church services that stick with you, never fail to move you, or you just simply love to sing? If you don’t have a particular song, do you prefer the traditional hymns or are you more into the contemporary Christian music of today. Or, what lyrics do you simply love, from any genre? Do you have a favorite song of all time? I am not sure if I have an all time favorite but I can tell you my husband's is Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers, and a guaranteed slow dance for me at any wedding reception.

  1. Oh yes! I love the one we sing that goes, "He is fairer than the fairest of ten thousand"
Also, I've been listening to an old cd lately that has some great worship songs on it. Music is SO powerful!
I don't have a favorite, but I do like different types, based on beat and lyrics.

  2. For some reason, I have always loved "Go Tell It On The Mountain". (I think that's what it's called.)

  3. Lyrics are enhanced books with rhythm added-what a mix-you can't lose with that combination. I love anything the Mormon Tabernacle choir sings-especially the Messiah hallelujah chorus always thrills me anytime of year

  4. I like to drive in silence too! After a busy day at the office, it is nice to sit in the quiet and reflect or think on story ideas. :)

The lyrics to the song that I love are from Blessed Be Your Name: Blessed be your name, when the sun's shining down on me, when the world is all as it should be, blessed be your name. Blessed be your name, on a road marked with suffering, when there's pain in the offering, blessed be your name. I love that. He is to be praised no matter my circustances!

    Thanks for the reminder!

  6. I love Christian music and other styles, too. Usually the songs come with the right words, exactly when I need them. Hey, I wonder what the angels singing sound like?

  7. I love contemporary Christian music and sing along with it the loudest when I'm driving in the car. We sing some of it in church and I love that atmosphere of everyone worshipping in unity.

  8. While I'm Waiting by John Waller is my new favorite, but I love many. Such a wonderful way to praise God, even if I am out of tune!

  9. Amy: What a great question. I love "Before the Throne of God" sung by Selah. Its lyrics speak of redemption and unconditional love. It encourages me every time I hear it.

Thank you for your kind encouragement to me about work. It is just filing for now but I'm praying they find something more challenging for me soon:)

  12. Often I get a song stuck in my head and it won't go away! I was just thinking today I may start listening to my Christmas music early. But most of the time on the way back and forth to work I'm listening to books on CD.

  13. I love driving in silence - it lets me think without being distracted by my dirty house!

I absolutely cannot think of a single song from church that sticks in my head...there's one that will catch me for a week, but they change as my struggles/successes change.

However, I've been humming Randy Houser's "Boots On" for weeks! Kind of bugs me, but it has a good beat :)
